ABOUT SOMALILAND COMMUNITY ACTION NETWORK (SCAN)

The Somaliland Community Action Network (SCAN) is a non-governmental, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting community development through reliable and multifaceted initiatives. Established in 2008, SCAN focuses on grassroots efforts aimed at alleviating poverty and human suffering while assisting communities in restoring stability and fostering social change. Our key areas of engagement include agricultural production and marketing, animal health and nutrition, food security, monitoring and statistical development, and capacity building.

SCAN’s primary mission is to serve the community through social, economic, and environmental initiatives, ultimately striving to build a socially responsible society. We are committed to improving the livelihoods of rural poor and empowering them toward sustainability.

→ Since its inception, SCAN has implemented numerous welfare relief, development, and issue-based programs, particularly for the empowerment of Somaliland’s vulnerable communities, including women, children, youth, displaced individuals, migrants, and unorganized sectors. Our vision is to translate community empowerment into meaningful social action and development programs while promoting the sustainable use of limited natural resources.

SCAN is dedicated to providing sustainable solutions to pressing community challenges through robust analysis and reliable data. In today’s information-rich environment, effectively utilizing vast amounts of data is essential for informed decision-making.

→ The organizational structure of SCAN includes a General Assembly, a Board of Directors, and a management team led by an Executive Director responsible for day-to-day operations. SCAN will maintain a main office with branches throughout the region, ensuring our functions align with international standards. We collaborate closely with government agencies, UN agencies, and international organizations to foster a comprehensive partnership approach to community development.

PURPOSE OF ESTABLISHMENT

The Somaliland Community Action Network (SCAN) is committed to addressing the complex humanitarian crises stemming from the country’s prolonged conflicts. Since 1991, Somalia has faced significant challenges, including widespread infrastructure destruction, loss of lives, and ongoing displacement due to intermittent violence and political instability. As a result, the country has become fragmented, with a lost generation struggling due to the absence of effective governance and limited access to basic social services.

SCAN works to restore hope and resilience in affected communities by focusing on critical issues such as livelihoods, agriculture, environmental sustainability, education, and employment opportunities. We tirelessly strive to alleviate food insecurity and improve living standards, particularly for vulnerable groups, including youth, women, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and impoverished rural communities.

→ Our initiatives encompass disaster prevention, drought response, and climate-resilient solutions, alongside the development of essential social services tailored to community needs. By implementing sustainable solutions to local challenges, we aim to enhance community resilience and their ability to cope with ongoing issues. SCAN is dedicated to reducing poverty, supporting national development goals, and promoting environmental sustainability.

→ Our organization is built on a core team of dedicated professionals with extensive experience in development programs. These members, who have been called upon by local communities and the region’s diaspora, are committed to promoting better livelihoods. Each member brings valuable expertise in development and contributes their voluntary services selflessly, driven by the vision of uplifting the most vulnerable and marginalized members of society, regardless of caste, creed, color, or religion.

Our commitment is to create a local organization that collaborates with the community to identify and address their basic needs. We mobilize collective action for social and economic improvement, particularly focusing on the most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups in the country.
